FOOT CARE TIPS
DIABETIC FOOT EXAM
Diabetics should get regular foot exams because nerve damage diminishes feeling in the feet, and foot problems could go unnoticed.
AGING AND FEET
As part of the normal aging process, it is not unusual for our feet to change in length and shape. The shape of the shoe should conform to the shape of the foot.
SHOES AND COMFORT
Wear soft, comfortable shoes. Shoes that are too tight are a contributing factor to foot problems. Since feet tend to swell later in the day, it is best to get fitted for new shoes later in the afternoon after the swelling has taken place.
PAINFUL FEET
When painful feet prevent wearing shoes or walking normally, see your podiatrist for an examination and treatment.
FEET PREVENTATIVE CARE
Remember to give the feet good preventive care: keep them clean, avoid injury, protect the skin, and wear properly fitted shoes. DO NOT ATTEMPT SELF-TREATMENT of corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, etc.
DAILY FOOT INSPECTION
Daily foot inspection is an important part of self-care. A hand mirror can help while checking the feet.
